Life is good when you’re a carefree young squirrel from a respected working class family living in the west side of New York City’s Central Park. At least HJ “Hoppin’ Jack” Graytail thinks so. There’s plenty of mischief, excitement, and fun to keep him and his best pal, a chipmunk named Chipper Quicktoes, very happy. Of course there’s school, too, but as long as you can keep out of the way of the Raccoon Brothers, who are the class bullies, that’s not too bad.
Life gets all the more interesting when HJ and Chipper happen to meet a lovely red squirrel named Lucky Rutherford and her next-tree neighbor, a clever black squirrel named Jet Burrelston. In spite of the fact that Lucky and Jet hail from well-to-do families on the Upper East Side of the Park, it doesn’t take long for the four to discover you shouldn’t judge a squirrel by its neighborhood and they become fast friends.
Just when HJ and Lucky are finding how much they like each other’s company, the Park’s community of woodfolk is terrorized by a series of murders. A tough gang of alley cats from a nearby neighborhood is moving into the Park and has decided to take over. Led by a merciless tom named Snake, these thugs have nothing in their hearts but a craving for power and violence. They mean business—bad business.
When the aging police force of the community, called the Protectors, is overrun by the cat gang, HJ and his friends suddenly find themselves in the forefront of a battle to save the animals of Central Park.
The Protector of Central Park eBook JT Brewer
The Protector of Central Park is the most delightful read for children 10-18 that I have come across all year! The authors, Judeen & Terry Brewer, have once again used their fun talent for producing real-life very believable characters to tell a story about Central Park in New York City and the young ones who live there. HJ Greytail and some of his next-tree neighbors love to "human watch" on weekends and try to understand why humans do what they do. This story within a story provides a very funny twist on small animal action against a background of humans they really "don't get" and lively descriptions of Central Park. You really need to get a copy of this book; if not for your children, do it for yourself. Everyone needs to laugh.Product details

The Protector of Central Park eBook JT Brewer Reviews
Snake, the leader of the ruthless gang of tomcats began drolly, "I've been informed that The Animals' Protective Patrol is made up entirely of ... some very fearsome old squirrels!'
"There was a moment of disbelief. Then the entire gang broke out in to loud, back-slapping laughter.
"'Squoirils?' Hot Shot bellowed, laughing so hard he could hardly speak. `Oh, I'm so scared. Bring `em on, bud! Bring `em on!'"
Meanwhile, Hoopin' Jack Graytail has organized Central Park's critters into a feisty, formidable force. With his fist in the air, Hoppin' Jack tells the crowd, "We will not let them take from us our homes, our families or our freedom! We don't back down! We're not wimps! We're fighters! We stand together! We're the animals of Upper Park!"
Thus in the book The Protector of Central Park, JT Brewer sets the stage for their engaging adventure story. This is a novel with all the elements I desire from good literature for children plenty of action, spirited and enterprising characters, a fascinating setting, and a base of solid values.
After reading The Protector of Central Park myself, I read it with my grandsons, ages 6, 8, and 12. The boys were thrilled with the amusing, clever battle scenes. I particularly enjoyed hearing young voices read aloud the funny lines of dialogue.
"Ya think ya can handle a couple o' squoirils? I wonda! Maybe we should let yer mudda go wit' cha!"
I am an elementary school teacher, and am presently working on a literature study for this outstanding book. I look forward to introducing my students to The Protector of Central Park. They are in for a delightful treat.
